Canal Walk is a massive (was the biggest in Africa when it opened) shopping centre outside of Cape Town. It was completed in 2000 and is actually pretty nicely done as far as malls go. The finishes are good, the place is well run and kept clean. There is also stacks of parking and it is affordable, unlike the Waterfront!
With over 400 stores and restaurants there is something for everyone. Here are some of the bigger shops:
- Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Checkers
- Stuttafords, Edgards, Truworths
- Cape Union Mart, Capestorm, Due South
- Nu Metro movies
They have a large American style central food court offering about 25-30 restaurants and fast food outlets and big screen TVs. Different attractions and shows are also often organised in the presentation area next to the food court. For instance I have watched an indoor soccer tournament for 6 year olds there!
Also note that all shops must be open from 9AM to 9PM every day (and this is extended around Xmas).
- Weekends can be pretty busy so be warned
- For some reason the top level is always less busy than the bottom level. Not sure why but it helps to know
The Canal Walk site has some pretty detailed directions and maps
- Take the N1 towards Paarl
- Take the Exit 10, Sable Road offramp and follow Century Drive signs
- Take Century Drive offramp and head up the hill towards the robots (airfield on the left)
- At the traffic lights turn left and continue between the airfield and Ratanga Junction (you will see the rollercoaster on your right)
- There will be a sharp right and at the next robots you should turn right
- Go through the traffic circle and then left into any of the many parking entrances
- Watch out for the speed trap on this road
