Five Flies is a trendy restaurant situated in the city centre on Keerom Street. The restaurant is in the landmark Rembrandt House building which is now a National Monument. It has been well renovated to form a large restaurant spread over several rooms and two floors. There is an enclosed cobbled courtyard and several smaller rooms (which can cater for private functions)
The menu has been described as "simple but racy" and the food is good. Diners choose a 2,3,4, or 5 course meal for a set price and can then choose from among several options. Expect to find items such as Bosc pear and Gorgonzola salad, Grilled kingklip with rice vermicelli and stir fried vegetables, grilled ostrich fillet and sweet mash potato, and kudu carpaccio. You can view the menu here
The staff is excellent, the food is good and the building and interior nicely finished.
- There is a bar and smoking area where you could relax and have a drink before or after the meal
Five Flies is at the end of Keerom Street on your left if you are heading down the road (away from the mountain)
- From Buitengracht get onto Wale Street (you can also get onto Wale from Adderley)
- Turn right onto Long Street (this is at a set of traffic lights) - you are now heading up the hill towards the mountain
- Take the first left onto Dorp Street (at the moment this is closed for maintenance - take the next left into Leeuwen)
- Five Flies is on the corner of Dorp and Keerom

Origin of the name
I asked our waiter where the name comes from. Apparently this is a sister restaurant of a place in Amsterdam called Die Vyf Vliegen. That was named as such because the original owner was named Vliegen and he built the restaurant on the ground floor of 5 adjacent blocks.
