Haute Cabriere is a wine farm in the Franschhoek pass and the home to the renowned Haute Cabriere Cellar Restaurant. The restaurant is built into the mountain and forms the upper sections of the wine cellar.
The menu is not very large, but the food is extremely good. All items on the menu can be ordered as starters (R40 to R80) or mains (R70 to R120). You can expect to find items such as salmon trout, veal, lamb, fish, risotto and some vegetarian options. The food is well presented and of excellent quality.
There is good wine on offer and the menu has been designed to go well with the many Haute Cabriere wines on offer. This will of course add fairly substantially to the cost of an already expensive meal.
Haute Cabriere is a long way from Cape Town, and the prices are steep, but this makes for a memorable meal. Try to combine it with some exploring in Franschhoek or a wine tasting session. The quality of the food and service is superb.
- Try to combine the meal with a cellar tour (11h00 on Saturdays) which includes the owners popping the top off a bottle of Champaign with a saber
- There are also wine tasting sessions Monday to Friday at 11h00 and 15h00
- Take the N1 to Paarl
- Take exit 47 (Stellenbosch / Wellington / Klapmuts turnoff)
- At the stop at the bottom of the off ramp turn right onto the R44
- Continue about 250 meters to a 4-way stop
- Cross straight over the 4-way stop
- Continue about another 200 meters
- Take first road to the left ~ sign posted "Franschhoek R45"
- Continue along this road until you get to a T-junction at Simondium
- Turn right towards Franschhoek (still the R45)
- The R45 becomes the main road of Franschhoek
- Drive straight through Franschhoek until you get to the T-junction in front of the Huguenot Memorial (3 large granite arches with a statue in front of them)
- Turn left towards the mountain pass
- Haute Cabrière is approximately 1.5 km up the pass road on the left hand side of the road
