The Mount Nelson is one of Cape Town's iconic hotels. Since its opening in 1899 this hotel has hosted many royal visitors and is a beautiful, luxurious and expensive spot. It is located at the top of the Company Gardens on Orange Street and is an elegant location.
More accessible to normal visitors and Cape Townians alike is the daily High Tea served on in the lounge, terrace and gardens. The beautiful setting and luxurious food make this a real experience.
A variety of teas are on offer but for many the attraction is the food accompanying such an extravagant tea. On offer are "savoury favourites the likes of smoked salmon and cucumber sandwiches, mini quiches and local cheeses, and sweet temptations from chocolate confectionery, to homemade marshmallows and fudge, cupcakes, scones, and assorted tea cakes"
- There is also a cheaper morning tea on offer for R95 per adult from 09:30 to 12:30
- This is quite a smart affair so don't arrive in shorts and slops
- Booking ahead of time is highly recommended
Here are directions from the N2:
- Get onto the N2 towards the city
- Take De Waal Drive (keep left going up the first hill)
- De Waal winds around the foot of Table Mountain
- As De Waal begins to descend the road passes under a walkway bridge - slow down there is a speed trap here
- Keep left and take the offramp onto Mill Street (follow signs for the Cableway)
- Mill Street becomes Orange street
- After two traffic lights the Mount Nelson is on the left - you'll see some massive pillars at the pedestrian crossing
- For the High Tea most people continue and take the next left (Rheede) and then left again into Kloof
- The parking at the Mount Nelson is accessed from the next left (Wilkonson)
