Die Strandloper is a superb open air seafood restaurant in Langebaan (about 125km up the west coast from Cape Town). It is a relaxed place on the beach of the Langebaan Lagoon with a sandy floor and tables arranged around the central fish braai. Meals are served over a leisurely three to four hour period and apart from the crayfish everything is eat as much as you like.

There is a small bar but you are welcome to bring your own wine and drinks (bring fancy glasses!) to enjoy throughout the meal. As each course is readied over the open fire you make your way to the serving station and help yourself to delicious and fresh seafood. The courses include (although not all of these names mean something to english people):

  • Bokkoms
  • Mussels in wine and onions
  • Mussels with garlic butter
  • Weskus Haarders
  • Seafood Paella
  • Braaied Snoek with potatoes and patats
  • Waterbloemmetjie Bredie
  • Smoked Angelfis
  • Stompneus (stumpnose)
  • Kreef (crayfish)
  • Moerkoffie (strong coffee)
  • Roosterkoek, fresh bread, farm butter and home made jams

There is also entertainment from a guitar playing funny man who sings well known Afrikaans songs and moves from table to table.

Make sure that you make a booking - this is a long way to drive.

Tips
  • No credit card facilities so take cash!
  • To really get the most of a long meal and the stunning surroundings make a lunch booking - that also leaves time to get back to Cape Town
  • Take along your own wine - no corkage!

Getting There
  • Take the R27 North from Cape Town
  • Drive past Blouberg and Table View and follow the road for approx. 1 hour
  • Turn left at the Langebaan turn off - just after the Engen garage
  • Follow this road for approx 8 to 10 kilometres
  • You will come to a Club Mykonos Casino sign. Turn right
  • Follow the road for about 300m and you will see Die Strandloper on the left hand side

this is the most fabulous place to spend a long, indulgent summer lunch! i went with an Australian friend earlier this year, and we spent hours devouring the unbelievable seafood on offer. it's eat as much as you like, but there's so much food that you just can't have it all. wash it down with hot 'moerkoffie' and you slowly make your way back home. what a view, too... truly something we all should treat ourselves to at some point!
