Kasteelpoort
2-4 hours
Kasteelpoort is a fairly well-known route up Table Mountain. Starting from the Pipe Track above Camps Bay this path climbs a fairly steep ravine and pops out on the 'back' of Table Mountain at the site of the original cable car.
The Kasteelpoort path is well signposted from the Pipe Track (about 20/30 mins walk from the start of the Pipe Track) and is also accessible from Camps Bay (jeep track up to the Pipe Track). The path climbs fairly steeply and some very easy scrambling may be required near the top.
Upon reaching the top of the gulley you can turn right to get a closer look at the ruins of the old cable car. It was used in the 1890s to bring building materials up for the construction of the nearby dams.
The paths on top of Table Mountain are well marked and there is a map at the top of the Kasteelpoort gulley which gives you some options. You can continue to the upper cable station, go down Platteklip Gorge, visit the nearby dams, or even take the Diagonal Path back down.
- Make sure that you check out the ruins of the historic cable car - fairly interesting
- Plan another route down so that this doesn't turn into an out-and-back
- The easiest place to begin this hike is at the start of the Pipe Track
- The Pipe Track starts at the Kloofnek parking lot and moves along the mountain above Camps Bay
- It is also possible to get to the Pipe Track from Camps Bay - this shortens the walking required along the Pipe Track itself
