Skeleton Gorge is a steep ravine which can be used to climb the back of Table Mountain from the Kirstenbosch botanical gardens. The route is steep but in the forest almost the whole way which is beautiful and helps to keep things cool.
The path is well signposted and begins at the top left of the gardens (if you are facing the mountain). After a short period on a jeep track the path ascends into the forests of the ravine itself.
At the top of the gorge hikers can visit the Hely-Hutchinson Dam, hike across Table Mountain to the cable station or return to Kirstenbosch via Nursery Ravine.
Tips
- Plan another route back down as Skeleton Gorge is very steep and descending the same way can be boring
- Check out the Hely-Hutchinson Dam at the top of the climb. Just carry on straight and you'll be there in 5 minutes
- At the higher sections of this route the rocks can get a little slippery so take care
Getting There
- Kirstenbosch lies 13 km from Cape Town city centre
- From the city, take De Waal Drive (M3) in the direction of Muizenberg
- At the first traffic light intersection turn right (southwards) into Rhodes Drive (M63) and follow the signs to Kirstenbosch
- Once inside Kirstenbosch head up and left towards the mountain - you will find the signs for Skeleton Gorge
