There are many routes up Table Mountain, and the Diagonal Path is not a very well known one. Starting at the Pipe Track (parking at the top of Kloofnek) you head out above Camps Bay along the Pipe Track. After about 30 minutes of hiking you will come across a sign for the Diagonal Path and there is a steep path to heading up the mountain to the left.

From here on in things are pretty steep and you will even need to do some scrambling on the way up the gulley. If you’re getting tired just stop and look behind you where you will see wonderful views out over the cold blue Atlantic Ocean.

Eventually, you will come out onto the top of the gulley, and now you need to walk along the top of the mountain back towards Cape Town and Table Mountain. This walk takes a while and some parts of it are along wooden platforms. Any hiking along the tops of the Cape Town mountains is wonderful and this is no exception.

When you get to the cable station you can either go back the way you came or optionally go down Platteklip Gorge and take the contour path back to the Pipe Track parking lot for a round trip

Tips
  • Watch out for the caves just after the top of the gulley
  • It is fun and more interesting to go back down Platteklip Gorge and then take the contour path back to your car at the Pipe Track
  • The climb up the gulley is pretty steep with some scrambling on the way up - try not to do this alone

Getting There
  • The Pipe Track parking area is immediately on the right as you turn onto Tafelberg Road from Kloofnek
  • Walk along the Pipe Track for about 20 minutes and you will see a sign pointing out the Diagonal Path

Took this route yesterday in magnificent weather and did not meet anybody on the whole way up after I left Pipe Track. The text describes this hike very accurately though I think 2 hours for the way up to cable station would be a very challenging time where you more or less run up without any views or break stops.
